Four Things to do Now to Prepare for the Retirement of Your Dreams

  • Imagine the lifestyle you want. Think about how you want to spend your days and how much money you’ll need. Then create a plan that will help you save enough to support your desired lifestyle. Don’t forget to include regular expenses such as health care, rent and utilities in addition to the fun stuff like spoiling your grandkids or traveling around the world.
  • Start now. It’s easy to put off saving for retirement when you have pressing bills to pay. But the sooner you start saving, the longer your money can grow and the more likely you are to have enough saved. It’s okay to start small and increase your contributions over time as your income increases or your expenses decrease.
  • Spend less than you earn. This may be easier said than done. But cutting spending now to secure your future is essential to saving enough to live comfortably when you are no longer working. Consider setting up automatic transfers into your retirement account(s) each month, so you’re not tempted to use the money for something else. And when you get a raise, save some or all of it for the future.
  • Explore all your options. If your employer offers a 401(k) or 403(b), that’s a good place to start saving, especially if they offer a matching contribution. But employer-sponsored retirement plans may be limited in their investment options, so don’t stop there. There are a variety of ways you can invest for retirement, including IRAs, annuities, real estate and much more.
