Safety Tips for Online Holiday Shopping

The holiday season is just around the corner, and the convenience of gift shopping online can’t be beat. Here are some safety tips to keep your private information safe from cyber criminals:

  • Make sure your computer anti-virus and spyware security programs are working and up-to-date. Install the latest operating system update for all your devices (desktop computer, laptop, tablet, mobile phone and web browsers).
  • Enroll in Credit and Debit Card Alerts in Online Banking to receive text messages that will help you monitor for suspicious account activity.
  • Only shop at secure websites as indicated by a padlock icon in the address bar of your web browser and/or a URL address with the ‘https’ pre-fix.
  • Review the privacy policy of online vendors you frequent to understand how your information will be stored and used.
  • Use strong passwords when setting up an online account with a service provider.
  • Save records of your online transactions, including a description of items purchased, transaction prices, electronic receipts, terms of sale, and copies of any email exchanges with a seller.
  • Regularly review your account statements and transaction history online to help identify unauthorized charges. If there is a discrepancy, report it immediately to the merchant and your financial institution.

A happy holiday season starts by taking precautions so the conveniences of online shopping can be enjoyed with peace of mind.
