Protect Your Home While Traveling for the Holidays

The holiday season is almost here, and though the ongoing pandemic is still affecting our lives, many people will still travel to visit family and friends.

Hitting the road to spend time with the loved ones may bring more cheer to your holiday celebration, but it also leaves your home vulnerable.

Here are some tips to safeguard your home while you’re away:

  • Shred it. Shred pre-approved credit offers you receive in the mail and paperwork that has sensitive data (e.g. social security and account numbers) that could be misused if it falls into the wrong hands.
  • Lock up. Make sure all the entry points into your home are locked, including doors, windows and garages. Consider installing an inexpensive home security system that runs off of your home’s Wi-Fi. Most of these systems allow you to monitor your home remotely via a mobile app with alerts delivered to your smartphone.
  • Stop the mail. An overflowing mailbox is a sign you’re not home, and it could invite burglars to help themselves to your personal information while you’re away.
  • Re-think lighting. A dark house 24 x 7 is another sign that no one’s home. Put interior lights on a timer or automated system you can control remotely with a smartphone. Consider getting motion sensors for exterior lights, so if someone approaches your home, they won’t be able to hide in the dark.
  • Don’t talk about your plans on social media. It may seem like everyone you know reports the highlights of their day in real time. If you post information about your trip online in real time, you’re announcing you’re not home. Wait until you get back to share the details of your trip.
  • Secure valuables. Put jewelry and other valuables in a safe and hide it someplace that’s not easy to find. If someone does break in while you’re away, they’re less likely to find it.
