Fun and Free Things to Do This Summer

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy the great outdoors, soak up the sun, and create lasting memories with family and friends. While it’s tempting to splurge on vacations and events, there are plenty of fun and free activities that can make your summer just as enjoyable without breaking your wallet.

1. Explore Local Parks & Trails

Your local parks and hiking trails are treasure troves of endless adventures just waiting to be discovered. Whether you prefer a leisurely stroll or an invigorating hike, spending time in nature is a great way to relax and recharge. Pack a picnic, bring your binoculars for bird watching, or simply enjoy the scenic views. The All Trails app is a free tool for outdoor enthusiasts, offering detailed information on hiking, running, and biking trails worldwide. It provides benefits such as user reviews, GPS tracking, and offline maps, helping users discover new trails and navigate them safely.

2. Visit the Beach

If you’re lucky enough to live near a beach or a lake, take advantage of it! A day at the beach can be filled with swimming, sunbathing, playing beach volleyball, or building sandcastles. Remember to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and snacks to keep you energized throughout the day.

3. Attend Free Community Events

Summer is a prime time for free community events such as outdoor concerts, movie nights, and festivals. Check your local community calendar or social media pages to find out what’s happening in your area. These events are great opportunities to meet new people and enjoy local culture.

If you’re near Northridge, we’ve partnered with CSUN for their Summer Movie Fest, where free outdoor films show weekly on Thursdays on the University Library Lawn (Directions to the Library | CSUN University Library).  Now through August 8, 2024, all community members can attend for free — although campus parking rules (Visitor Parking Information | California State University, Northridge (csun.edu)) are in effect. Activities start at 6 PM, and the screenings start at dusk — approximately 7:45 to 8 PM. Picnics, low lawn chairs and well-behaved dogs on leash welcome. There will be various food trucks, photo booths, lawn games and activities themed around the movie of the week.

If you find yourself in the Houston area this summer, make sure to visit Discovery Green for an array of free weekly events and activities. This vibrant 12-acre park, born from a public-private partnership between the City of Houston and the non-profit Discovery Green, offers something for everyone. Whether you’re interested in line dancing, bilingual Zumba, or yoga, Discovery Green's schedule is packed with exciting and free activities. Head over to their website to see the full lineup and make the most of your summer without spending a dime!

4. Explore Local Museums and Art Galleries

Many museums and art galleries offer free admission on certain days or have specific hours when entry is free. Spend a day exploring these cultural gems and learning something new. It’s a great way to stay cool and indoors while still having a rich and educational experience.

5. Organize a Game Night

Invite friends over for a game night filled with board games, card games, or even video games. It’s an inexpensive way to have a lot of fun and create lasting memories with your favorite people.

6. Take Advantage of Free Library Programs

Local libraries often host a variety of free programs during the summer, including reading clubs, workshops, and movie screenings. Check your library’s schedule and take advantage of these great resources. Better yet, join a book club!

7. Enjoy a Scenic Drive or Bike Ride

Sometimes, the journey itself is better than the destination. Take a scenic drive or bike ride through areas you’ve never explored. Pack some snacks and stop at interesting spots along the way to take pictures and enjoy the view.

Summer doesn’t have to be expensive to be enjoyable. With a little creativity and a sense of adventure, you can find plenty of fun and free activities to fill your days. We believe in making the most of your time and money, and we hope these ideas inspire you to have an amazing summer without stretching your budget. Happy summer!
