Fun Ways to Teach Kids About Money

Summer break is the perfect time for family fun and a little hands-on financial education! Teaching your kids about saving doesn’t have to be all charts and piggy banks — with a little creativity, you can turn everyday activities into unforgettable lessons. We are here to help you turn playtime into learning time.

DIY Ideas That Double as Money Lessons:

1. Lemonade Stand with a Twist

Go beyond the classic lemonade stand by helping your child budget for ingredients, set pricing, and track profit. Have them split their earnings into three jars: Spend, Save, and Share — teaching budgeting and generosity at the same time. 2. DIY Coin Bank Craft

Transform mason jars, cereal boxes, or empty oatmeal containers into custom piggy banks. Let the kids decorate their own and set savings goals—whether it’s for a new toy or their future college fund.

3. "Grow Your Savings" Garden

Plant fast-growing herbs like basil or mint in recycled containers. Label each pot with a savings goal (e.g., “Movie Night” or “New Backpack”). Watching savings literally grow teaches kids the value of patience and planning.

4. Homemade Chore Coupons

Design printable "Chore for Cash" coupons kids can redeem for doing extra chores. Teach them to save the earned money or use it in a family “store” you create at home.

Summer memories are priceless, but teaching your kids smart money habits is a gift that lasts forever. For more tools to help your family save, check out our Youth Accounts and our parent resources
